In 2000 it was chosen as the first book to be featured on the Oprah Winfrey website, www. womenshands.com, which is part of www.oxygen.com and Anne Chambers was the first author to participate in an online question and answer session with visitors to the site.
Three documentaries for TV based on the book have been filmed, the latest for the Discovery Channel will be broadcast in Autumn 2003.
The book was the inspiration for the Irish composer Shaun Davy's composition THE GRANUAILE SUITE (Tara Records).
Anne Chambers, together with David T. Reilly, have
written a feature-length screenplay, GRACE O'MALLEY,
commissioned by Lawson Productions, with the backing
of the Irish Film Board and which is presently in
development.
At the launch of the recent new and revised edition of Granuaile: The Life and Times of Grace O' Malley , the President of Ireland, Mary MacAleese commended the new book, 'as a fitting tribute both to Grace O'Malley and to Anne Chambers' dedication and tenacity.'
The Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland, Mary Harney, who launched the book on board the Irish ship, GRANUAILE, described Grace O'Malley as 'the original trail-blazer'. It is only now that women are beginning to achieve in politics, business and in the maritime field, the goal set for them four hundred years before by Grace O'Malley.'
REVIEWS OF THE BOOK
'A superbly researched work...it salvages the 16th century Mistress of the Western Waves from the rather frivolous folklore which surrounds her.' Irish Times
'This book will be an inspiration to women throughout
the world.' Mary Harney, TD, Tanaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) of Ireland.
